Walden

DGAA brought Magnetic North’s acclaimed one-man adaptation of Thoreau’s classic book, Walden, to Dumfries and Galloway in late 2009, when it played in The Buccleuch Centre, Langholm, The Midsteeple, Dumfries and at The CatStrand, New Galloway.

On 4th July 1854 Henry David Thoreau, a 27 year old Harvard graduate, failed teacher and student of Eastern philosophy, walked into the woods near his hometown of Concord, Massachusetts and decided to stay. For 26 months he lived alone in a hut he built on the shores of Walden Pond and attempted to survive entirely by his own resources. Walden, Thoreau’s account of his ‘experiment in simple living’ is one of the most extraordinary and unclassifiable books ever written.

Following rave reviews and packed houses at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Magnetic North are thrilled to be touring their critically successful one-man adaptation of Walden across Scotland and beyond. An intimate, humorous and thoughtful piece of theatre, Walden explores self-sufficiency, the individual’s relationship with their environment and the desire ‘not to live cheaply or dearly but to live deliberately’- ideas as vital today as they were 155 years ago.

Walden is a collaboration between Magnetic North’s Artistic Director Nicholas Bone, environmental artists Sans façon (the group name of Charles Blanc and Tristan Surtees) and actor Ewan Donald.
