Mischief La-Bas, Scotland’s leading Street Theatre Company, brought good moods to Dumfries in March 2010 with The Market of Optimism, a free afternoon of fun designed to lift the spirits in the light of current economic meltdown and the general sense of universal misery.
The Market of Optimism is an interactive outdoor street theatre experience, featuring sixteen genuine market stalls, two living cashpoints and a variety of wandering characters.
Large crowds of people turned out on the High Street and withdrew a special currency – Neuros – from free ‘banks’, before proceeding to exchange them for wonderful wares.
The Market offered a wide range of uplifting products: people invested in magical makeovers, trips to the opticians for rose-tinted spectacles, or attempts at the grow your own luck stall. There were magic lamps, heavenly estates and good vibrations, appealing to optimists of every age and disposition.
