Southlight 9

Southlight 9

Southlight is our literary magazine, publishing the best in poetry, prose and critical work.

Our latest issue is Southlight 9, published in July 2011, marks the upcoming centenary of the birth place of Sorley MacLean with an articale by Aonghas MacNeacail. Maclean’s poetry is resonant with a sense of place – not least his great poem Hallaig in which he locates themes of love, loss and haunting in a cleared township on Raasay – but with a marvellously articulated sense of  ‘place’ in history, politics and tradition, as well as the landscapes and seascapes with which he waas familiar. Much of this will remain elusive for readers of his poetry who are unable to access it in Gaelic: for those reading in translation, we would recommend a helpful article by Sean Haldane – A Dying Tongue: Reading Sorley Maclean – in The Dark Horse (No 20, Summer 2007).

Southlight costs £7, available from the dgArts Information Hub at the Midsteeple, or subscribe for a year (3 copies) for £16 plus £3.95 post and package.
